Las Vegas is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the winter, and many people who come to Las Vegas are also planning to potentially visit some of the national park areas that are within driving distance.  This presents a quandary as some people do the fact that they have come all the way to Las Vegas and would love to see an area like the grand canyon, but are sure if it is good to visit in the winter or not.  People from other parts of the country are not used to desert weather, and have little idea as far as how to dress or the temperatures to expect while they’re there.  They also believe any times that the weather patterns or someone like other areas of the country, which is far from the truth.  The grand canyon is rarely going to see snow that would create a situation where you might not be able to visit the specific areas that you are looking for, although snow does happen from time to time.  Generally what we are considering in the winter as far as grand canyon visits is how cold it will get in the evening and how warm it will be during the day, so we can let our guests know how to dress in order to be comfortable in the different situations that are going to happen.  If the weather is in the fifties or sixties we would highly suggest dressing in a way that will allow for hiking to happen, because this is actually perfect weather for getting out in hiking in this beautiful country.  We actually go as far as to say that hiking in the winter in the grand canyon is more comfortable than hiking in the summer due to the fact that desert temperatures can get a little high for some people to be comfortable.  If you prepare by wearing layers of clothing and bringing a coat to wear in case the temperatures do go down into the forties, you will be able to prepare effectively for the transition between the bus ride and getting out and hiking.  The main issue is going to be how cold bullet that night, and the grand canyon does have the ability to get down into the twenties overnight with some regularity.  On the very cold kinds of nights we’re not going to camp outdoors and instead will make other arrangements, but many times we will find that the weather is crisp at night but not uncomfortable, so wearing warm clothes inside your sleeping bag provides are great overnight experience.  To answer the question specifically, the weather and the grand canyon can vary during the winter from the seventies down to the twenties over the course of day and night, it is very difficult to predict in advance what kind of whether you are going to get.  That’s why we all we suggest packing clothing that will be able to be worn in layers and we’ll be able to be put on or taken off no matter what kind of temperature we are given.
