Rock slide closes Zion National Park roadway

In Zion National park, and access roadway was closed on 9/23/15 due to a large rockslide that blocked safe access for vehicles.  There were no injuries in the incident, however the National Park Service made the determination to close the roadway due to potential dangers from the large rocks and boulders on the roadway.

Utah State Route 9,  (Zion-Mount Caramel Highway,) was closed from Canyon Junction to East Entrance because of a significant rockslide.   This incident  happened on the switchback near Pine Creek Bridge.  The plan is to use explosives to reduce the large rocks to the levels of manageability and remove them from the roadway.  Heavy machinery will accomplish this task, and the expectation of the re-opening of the roadway is either later tonight or tomorrow.  At this point, the scenic routes through Zion National Park remain open.
