Antelope Canyon is one of the most beautiful and interesting areas on earth. The very reason it is so beautiful is also what makes it dangerous, and is the reason that Navajo Nation will only allow guided tours of the area. It was created by flash flooding rushing across the soft sandstone ground of the area, ultimately eroding a path that continues to grow deeper and wider every year as a result. The danger in Antelope Canyon is that the flash flooding that can literally not be seen from the ground when it happens. The flash flooding that created Antelope Canyon can start miles away and be brought about by rain debate is not visible from the area at the canyon.  This means that by the time that flood waters reach the canyon there is a possibility that those inside could be harmed or swept away.  There have been instances over the years where people have been hurt and even killed as a result of flash flooding that was not visibly obvious when they entered the canyon itself.  The floodwaters create not only completely smooth walls that are a multitude of colors because they are carved from sandstone, but they also create a sand floor that allows for some of the most spectacular pictures at certain times of the year.  There are two times each year that the sun is positioned perfectly above the canyon in order to provide a light beam from the top to the canyon floor, we are seeing and can be thrown into the air to create a spectacular image.  Even during the times when this is not available, the canyon is still one of the most spectacular slot canyons on earth, providing visuals that most people will never be able to forget.

If you would like to tour antelope canyon, we would suggest taking one of our tours which also visits Zion and Bryce canyon.  This is a suggested tour because there is no ability to predict if antelope canyon will be able to be toured up until the morning of that tour.  This is because close monitoring of weather in the region there is absolutely no chance of rain within the region that could provide floods.  This means that many times when you arrive at antelope canyon they will not be available to be toured, and you will need to make other plans.  We prefer to utilize our multi park tours to visit antelope canyon for this reason, so that if inclement weather closes it for tours we have the ability to go to a different region so as not to have an entire day lost.  There is no way to assure upon booking that you will be able to visit antelope canyon on the day that you desire, and it is far better be able to have a multitude of choices once you are in the region than simply turning around and driving home.  For more information about antelope canyon tours from Las Vegas contact us today.
