The National Parks System has continually been under pressure by opponents since its beginning.  For those unfamiliar with when the National Parks System is in the United States, it is a series of 62 protected areas which are known as national Parks.  These regions are operated by the national park service which is the portion of the department of the interior, and they receive Federal funding and protection against development in order to ensure that they remain in their pristine state.  In order to become a national park and act of Congress is necessary that will grant protection status to the region and then provide Federal funding in order to not only ensure protection but also to develop without major impact the aspects of tourism that will act to attract people to the region.  National Parks of the United States are not only available to all U.S. citizens, but anyone who wants to visit them.  In exchange for a nominal entrance fee, to anyone can visit these areas and explore them as they wish.  The entire point of the National Parks System once to protect the beauty of the United States and its treasures in a way that will not only ward off destruction from development but also protect the species of plants and animals that live there.  It was realized in the organic act of 1916 that the development of a national park service was necessary to protect specific regions of the United States which potentially would be impacted by ongoing development.  It was determined that in order to protect the cultural and pristine organic beauty of these regions, the government would need to intervene in order to prevent development that could destroy what existed.  The first park that was created was Yellowstone in 1872 when President Ulysses S grant signed the act of Congress which made it a protected region.  Through the antiquities act previous there had been many national monuments created, but these did not fall under a specific agency of the United States for protection.  National Parks System was finally designated to do this work, and while opponents to land protections will provide an argument every year against the Federal funds that are needed to keep these areas beautiful, at this point in time we still have the ability to visit any of the national Parks in the United States at our leisure.
